It’s easy to take for granted just how good this public course actually is, because generally speaking it has always been one of the better public courses in Melbourne. It’s challenging, but also hacker friendly, with some holes on the back nine that are about as close to playing on Royal Melbourne, without actually playing on Royal Melbourne... it’s like a poor person’s RMGC!
Like most public courses though, it gets very dry during the height of summer, especially when there is little to no rain to speak of (good if you like hitting long drives, bad otherwise). The best time to play here is during spring and at the start of summer, when the fairways are green and spongy, and you get true reward for keeping on the fairway.
As a poor uni student though it’s not necessarily very cheap - if only they did concession rates for students! But during summer they have an unlimited deal after 4pm, and winter it’s 12 holes for $20(approx.).
