Mt Desert Island has a jewel of a course on it, that seems under utilized. I was lucky enough to be one of maybe 2 people out on a rainy June morning, and doubly lucky to play the course in its setup for the Maine Amateur Championships.
Absolutely stunning condition, and on a clear day playing golf in the shadow of Cadillac mountain must be beautiful.
The layout is clearly old golf, but that’s fine. The designer used the land he was given to make a challenging, enjoyable course. Great way to break up some hiking with a well deserved 18.
For some reason, we played this almost entirely alone on a Saturday in June so we played 18 holes in 2:31:35, an all time fastest (and most exhausting) round.
Clearly a classic design, it more than makes up for its lack of length with challenging terrain features, undulating fairways and greens that I personally found entirely impossible to read.
Highly recommend this course for anyone in the area, it’s beautiful, forgiving, and a well kept jewel of American golf history.
