Fantasy Golf on DraftKings – The WGC Mexico Championship
Lock of the week:
Jordan Spieth $10,500 – The Golden Child is back in the field after a week off and we are locking him in our lineups for this tournament. Jordan improved his game and especially putting during his last start (Genesis Open) on a course (Riviera) that is very comparable to this weeks venue Club de Golf Chapultepec. As far as stats go, Mr. Spieth is checking all the boxes and ranks top 10 in the field in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, Strokes Gained: Approach and also number one in the field in Scrambling. The price reduction is also extremely attractive as you don’t normally see Jordan as the 4th highest player which will allow us to budget for several guys in the 7K and 8K range to complete our lineups.
Paul Casey $8,400 – The case for Paul Casey is fairly simple as he is easily the most glaring error in pricing that jumps out at us. He is a box-checking machine this week as far as Strokes Gained: Approach, Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, and Strokes Gained: Off the Tee. DraftKings scoring will also be extremely important to win cash this week as the WGC Mexico is a no-cut event. On that note, Casey ranks 6th in the field in DK scoring putting him just below favorites like DJ, Rahm, and JT but at a much cheaper value.
Tony Finau $8,500 – Speaking of DraftKings scoring, guess who’s number 4 in the field? Yep, Mr. Tony Finau himself. Finau’s game quickly got right back into form with a T2nd at the Genesis despite a missed cut a couple weeks prior at the Waste Management. He is primed for another, as Pat likes to say, “great fantastic” week in Mexico. Finau has gained almost 22 Strokes on the field in his last 3 events fueled by an approach game that has been absolute fire. Throw in that we are stealing him at $8500 and we will gladly play Finau as one of our core plays for the week.
Xander Shauffele $7,800 – Xander has been a model of consistency this season with 2 top ten finishes and only one missed cut in his last 8 starts. X also checks the box in scoring, Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, and Putting (he grew up playing the Poa Annua greens that are on the course this week). We’ll take the consistency, course fit, and likely low ownership all the way to the bank this week!
Best bargain basement option:
Jhonattan Vegas $6,900 – It’s very tough to find a solid go-to bargain basement guy in this field, but Vegas is clearly head and shoulders above the guys near him at the bottom. He checks the box in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee and Scrambling which are both key stats for this course. Vegas is also one of the few “cheap” options who played here last year which is key as the elevation level causes the ball to go much further and takes some getting used to. He is also a veteran on Tour who can win and score well almost any week and on any course so we’ll use that knowledge to our advantage to gain an edge picking the bargain plays.
Player to Avoid:
Justin Rose $9,700 – DISCLAIMER! We know Justin is a world-class player and week in and week out should not be a fade. BUT, this week with such a strong field you sometimes have to take a hard line and gamble by fading a guy that should have high ownership. Rose is that guy for us this week as he has not been putting well and is coming off a month-long layoff from tournament play. Rosie also played very average on this course last year with only one round under par (and that was by just one shot). It’s risky but we’re feeling frisky this week and we aren’t handing out a rose to Mr. Rose this week. Bome!
