Lexi Rewrites the Record Book
With Lexi Thompson breaking the tournament scoring record at the Kingsmill Championship, the conversation moves to how her performance stacks up against the LPGA Record Books. At the 2017 Kingsmill Championship, Lexi Thompson broke the tournament scoring record with an inspiring 6-under 65 on the final day for a total of 20-under. This feat would break Annika Sorenstam’s previous record of 19-under for the tournament in 2008.
One would think that her grueling mishap at the Ana Inspiration would have put her in a tough spot going into this tournament, but her mental fortitude proved just as strong as her recent form on the course. When it comes to personal best rounds, consecutive wins and tournament scoring records, the list features the very best in LPGA history. In 1978, Nancy Lopez won five tournaments in a row and nine total during her first full season. Annika Sorenstam tied Lopez in a slightly different way by winning the last two tournaments in 2004 in a season and coming back to win three consecutive to tee off 2005. In 1985, Kathy Whitworth won her 88th LPGA tournament and holds the all-time record for tournament wins for both the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour. She started her winning span in 1962.
Annika Sorenstam also is the LPGA player who holds the lowest 18-hole score with a 13-under 59 at the 2001 Standard Register Ping in the third round. In 2015, Lydia Ko became the youngest to win a LPGA tournament at the Canadian Women’s Open. Lexi also makes the “Youngest Golfers to Win” list with her victory at the 2011 Navistar LPGA Classic at just 16 years-old! Patty Berg stands out as the woman who has won the most LPGA majors at 15 titles.
Lexi Thompson is a role model for all women and girls who love the game of golf.
