Chambers Bay sits on 930 acres along Puget Sound in University Place, Washington, land that used to be a sand and gravel quarry. Robert Trent Jones II moved 1.4 million cubic yards of material to turn an old mine into a links-style course, and the USGA noticed fast. In 2015, Chambers Bay became the youngest course ever to host a US Open, and the first Open played anywhere in the Pacific Northwest.

A Course With Almost Nothing on It
Most championship courses are defined by their trees, their water, their bunkers. Chambers Bay has almost none of that. There is exactly one tree on the entire property, and it barely comes into play. There are no cart paths either. This is a walking-only course, six miles of fescue-covered dunes and blind shots with the Olympic Mountains as a backdrop.
What it lacks in obstacles, it makes up for in scale. Fairways run 80 yards wide in places, greens stretch over 8,000 square feet, and the wind off the Sound can turn a routine par 3 into a guessing game. In 2015, that combination produced one of the most unpredictable US Opens in recent memory. Jordan Spieth won his second major of the year there at 21 years old, the youngest champion since 1923, after Dustin Johnson three-putted the 72nd hole.
